Camera angles and movements in Flipped

Flipped is one of my all-time favourite movies, from the backstory to character development, and camera work.

The slow movement in towards the main characters faces as they talked about what they admire about each other, from their eyes to their personalities. The slow pull allows the audience to feel as the characters start to equally share a love for each other. As at the beginning of the movie only one character is seen with that slow drag in motion of the camera.

Over the shoulder, shots are used to emphasize how the main characters only see each other many times in this movie. In this particular scene, the shot is used to create a sense of jealousy, and of friction. As the tension increase between the two main characters as the boy is finally revealed to like the girl.

One of my favourite shots from the whole movie, as from the top of the tree. This shot provides the whole landscape and a great ariel view as the girl takes a whole perspective on her friendship and what her family means to her. It seems to slow down the whole movie to this one specific moment between the girl and her favourite tree to see this view. This also leads to a main point in the movie.

The final shot in the movie is zooming out to reveal the whole landscape (an important theme throughout the movie) as the characters finally come together to peace with each other (also symbolized by the tree shown). Likely using a dolly to film this scene.

Hope you enjoyed,

Sofia
